Itinerary

Tasmania’s second-largest city, Launceston sits pretty on the banks of the Tamar River. Arrive early? Distractions are endless. We suggest jumping on a boat to cruise the waterway, gliding through the Tamar Valley or up into Cataract Gorge. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants.

Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. Consider yourself a bit of a gourmand? Some of Tassie’s top wineries are within easy reach. Sip your way around the Josef Chromy estate, Swinging Gate or Jansz before meeting the adventurous souls that will keep you company over the next week. Meet your Travel Director for a drink before embarking on your journey along Tasmania’s glorious east. Stay: Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston

Arriving at Bridestowe Lavender Estate, you could be forgiven for thinking you've been transported straight to Provence in France. This bucolic patch of purple is a feast for all the senses. Wander neat rows of flowers while engulfed by soothing aromas (did you know lavender is a great sleep aid?). Then taste the property's wares, whether in lavender ice-cream or honey made from the 500,000 very happy bees that spend their days here, fluttering amid flowers.

Moving moments await at Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, an avenue of sculpted trees, carved in homage of fallen WWI soldiers. It's a poignant reminder of just how privileged we are to have Tasmania's scene-stealing landscapes to gaze over today. Be sure to end your night spotting the area's little penguins. (B/D) Stay: Diamond Island Beach Resort

Embarking on your Freycinet adventure, you may think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time. The towering Hazards Range that backdrops your base gleams pink in the morning sunshine. Fun fact: the prized granite here was used to build the foyer of New York's Empire State Building.

Beyond, the brilliant blue ocean curves into perfect coves carpeted with golden sand. And dusty greens patchwork Cape Tourville's virgin eucalypt forest, stretching as far as the eye can see. And you get to take it all in on a Wineglass Bay lunchtime cruise, revealing the gem-like crescent and its (albeit brisk) gin-clear water. There's a reason this beach tops global “best of the best” lists. Dive in if you dare! (B/L/D) Stay: Eastcoaster Tasmania

Freestone Point was once home to the world's largest wood chip mill, built on the unceded lands of the Paredarerme people. It's had a philosophy change, and is now intent on charting a sustainable path. Today's onward journey takes you to Hobart, but before you arrive in the Tasmanian capital, you're treated to a Welcome to Country by the Traditional Owners of Oyster Bay.

If you thought this industrial setting is beyond repair, wait till you see the organic gardens - help horticulturalists propagate seeds that will be returned to the mill's grounds. Richmond impresses in a different way - this historic town is like stepping back in time. (B) Stay: Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart (3 Nights)

Isle of the Dead, Pirate's Bay Lookout, Devil's Kitchen… the attractions around Port Arthur Historic Site give away the region's grim convict heritage. But don't be put off by the colourful names; the rolling green countryside, rugged cliffs and dramatic rock formations make this one of the most postcard-perfect pockets of the state. Explore what remains of the World Heritage Site on a Port Arthur guided tour with a historian - they know all the secrets that took place behind these walls - then enjoy a different perspective of the attraction from the water on a scenic cruise.

Tonight is yours to enjoy at your leisure. We can recommend any number of stellar restaurants and wine bars to while away the evening in. (B)

Today is one of decisions. Do you fancy lingering on a Hobart tour of the city centre, exploring gallery-lined streets and taking in glorious Georgian architecture, either at your leisure or with a guide? Or perhaps you're inclined to explore the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, occupying one of Australia's most historically significant sites and home to an eye-watering 800,000 objects ranging from fossils to fine art.

Maybe you want to end your Launceston to Hobart tour the way it began: savouring the state's end-of-the-Earth wilderness areas. Take on Mount Wellington, with its glorious alpine forest and views of the River Derwent. Or cruise to spot playful sea lions and ogle Australia's highest sea cliffs around Bruny Island. That's an island, off and island, off an island. It's a difficult choice, but it's all yours. (B/D)

Epic landscapes, tasty food and wine, historic attractions - we've packed a lot into the last week. Today, digest all your tours from Launceston to Hobart (those money-can't-buy adventures and experiences) as we bid adieu (B)

This morning, the GPS is set for the historic township of Richmond; explore the convict-built goal and bridge or browse the quaint boutique shops. Next, join us for a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience at Risdon Cove. Kipli Takara (meaning food walk) is an immersive experience where you're invited to walk the culturally rich landscape with palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) guides across this abundant natural pantry.

Taste the seasonal native bush tucker and get a first-hand glimpse into how palawa continue to enjoy cultural foods and undertake culturally-centred land management across lutruwita/Tasmania. This experience includes a unique tasting of local, native flavours. Now, want to disconnect from technology, and reconnect with Mother Nature? You've come to the right place.

To the northeast of Hobart in Sorell, Iron Creek Bay Farm comes with seclusion and style to spare. This is your base for the night, and what calming treasures await. This working farm is enveloped by 70 hectares of orchards growing cherries, apricots, apples and grapes. You're invited to pick fruits during your stay, and you'll likely meet an array of resident animals. The food here heroes Tassie produce in all its glory. It doesn't get any fresher than this. (B/L/D) Stay: Iron Creek Bay Farm

While the World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site has a grim convict history, you wouldn't know it today - the countryside is all rolling green fields and ocean views, best glimpsed on a Port Arthur guided tour with an in-the-know historian. The secrets they can tell… Today you will cruise around the Isle of the Dead, glimpse rugged sea cliffs from Pirate's Bay Lookout, and marvel at Tasman's Arch, Devils Kitchen and the Blowhole.

Tonight is at your leisure in Hobart - we can recommend any number of stellar restaurants and wine bars. There's no shortage in Tasmania's cool little capital. (B) Stay: Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart

Amazing! 1 , Canada, Sep 2019
Our 6 day tour of Tassie was nothing short of amazing with spectacular scenery, experienced and personable tour guide and driver. Margaret and Tom are exceptional and true assets to AAT Kings. Our travel agent Hannah Campbell, was very friendly and professional assisting us with our booking of the Tassie tour with AATKings! Thank you Hannah!
Tassie Getaway 1 , NSW, Australia, Nov 2015
Domenic and I were very impressed with all of the tour but felt it was not long enough though. The 1st day that it supposed to have started, it was a get to know you time and the last day was breakfast and leave so really it was only 4 days of touring. The Tour Director Dave was excellent very caring with all of us and very knowledgeable as well as ...read more Brett our driver. The places we stayed at were great and the tour was great very pretty. Only one criticism the modern Art Gallery in Mona we were not impressed and we stayed there too long. Maybe a younger group would like it. We just loved the ducks, lizards and peacocks that were roaming the grounds.
Will definitely travel with AAT Kings again 1 , Australia, Jan 2014
A great tour, of the east coast of Tasmania. Our tour guide, Greg was excellent, knowledgable and took care of all our travel arrangements with ease and in an organised manner. Global journeys were prompt in replying to email requests and organised the trip well. I will definitely travel with AAT Kings again.
Overall a very enjoyable time 2 , Australia, Oct 2013
Excellent accommodation in Launceston and Hobart, others acceptable. Sites visited were excellent and informative, except Mona which I found objectionable. Coach, Driver and Tour Director superb. Overall a very enjoyable time.
Tour was great but somewhat hurried 1 , Australia, Oct 2013
Thought the tour was great but somewhat hurried. Perhaps this was because we joined the tour midway. This was our first bus tour so we were not familiar with the processes. We will be in the know next time! In my view the tour leader, Carolyn, was the difference in making this tour so enjoyable. Her personality, knowledge and wherewithal was just ...read more great. She is certainly an asset to AAT Kings. Further the skills of the driver were superb getting that huge vehicle through not so good roads was no mean feat and he, too, was great. Hope these comments are helpful.
Learned a lot in a fun way - well worth the time! 1 , Australia, Mar 2013
Loved the trip - particularly the expertise & depth of knowledge of the tour director Carolyn Tipper. Learned a lot in a fun way - well worth the time! :)
